2.5 Increase Inward Investment Into the United States

Why is increasing inward investment into the United States important?

The U.S. receives the world's largest amount of foreign investment, $253.6 billion of investment inflows during 2018. Continuing this trend is good for the U.S. economy and U.S. workers. The Department of Commerce is advocating for foreign investment into the U.S. both overseas and domestically. The Department assists investors by: 1) connecting them to the right people and 2) helping them navigate the regulatory system.

Strategic Objective 2.5 Progress Update

Using the convening power of the U.S. government to showcase investment opportunities and bring investors and U.S. locations together, the International Trade Administration (ITA), a bureau of the Department of Commerce, hosted the SelectUSA Investment Summit on June 10-12, 2019.  This summit was one of ITA's largest, drawing more than 3,100 attendees to Washington, D.C. Several new announcements were made, including nearly $100 million in new investment projects and the release of ITA's case-study report on reshoring in the United States. In total, 1,200 business investors from a record 79 international markets joined economic developers from 49 states and territories. Exceeding its annual target of 3,800, ITA assisted over 5,400 investment clients through July 2019.

The Department of Commerce helps foreign investors connect with U.S. communities and navigate the regulatory system. In 2018, ITA facilitated 20.1 billion in foreign investment into the U.S. This facilitated the creation of 22,181 jobs, and the retention of 4,932 jobs.
The SelectUSA program assists U.S. economic development organizations to compete globally for investment by providing information, a platform for international marketing, and high-level advocacy. SelectUSA also helps companies of all sizes find the information they need to make decisions, connect to the right people at the local level, and navigate the federal regulatory system.
A total of $4.3 trillion is invested into the U.S. by other countries as of 2018
