5.2 Accelerate Information Technology Modernization
Why is modernizing IT important?
Up-to-date information technology (IT) is needed for Commerce to provide the quality and timely service people have come to expect in this digital age. Modern IT equipment and applications enable more efficient delivery of current services and new services that innovation has made possible. The speed of business is ever increasing and new technology will keep Federal programs relevant to the emerging business environment.
Strategic Objective 5.2 Progress Update
The Office of the Chief Information Officer is progressing across three focus areas to enhance the Department's cybersecurity risk management capabilities through IT modernization. The following three focus areas are driving improvement and reducing risk across our organization's IT enterprise:
- Secure Department of Commerce Data and Systems

- Transform the Office of the Chief Information Officer
Continuous awareness and assessment of security risks - 2019 target met
As the custodian of vital information on businesses and the economy, Commerce must vigilantly monitor cyber security risks. This requires real-time surveillance of information security. In 2019, the Department met its goal of 95% ongoing awareness of security risks. With continued modernization of IT equipment and protocols, the Department will continue to advance its mitigation of threats to information security.
In 2019, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) met 100% of Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) 2.0 requirements
NOAA, one of the largest bureaus in the Department of Commerce, met its goal of complying with 100% of the security requirements put forward by the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Management and Budget.
